America has Switched Sides
America has switched sides and joined the Axis of Authoritarianism (hereafter Axis). The trashing of America, its constitution, values, and the price paid in blood and treasure by generations of its defenders since the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 until the current day, have been rendered moot. America has come full circle from George III to self-crowned Don I.
If the message was unclear, yesterday America voted with new friends and allies, Sudan, North Korea, Belarus and Russia, against Ukraine at the UN. Notably, that was a bridge too far even for the Chinese Communist Party, who abstained. This coincided with the US President declaring embattled wartime leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator who started the invasion of his own country by Russia. When asked by a reporter if America's closest ally, Vladimir Putin, was also a dictator the President ummed and arred.

Despite the fact that Imperial conquest of resources by victors went out of fashion in the 19th Century, America has demanded Ukraine give the US its rare earth minerals as spoils of war. Why America sees itself as a victor in this war can only be explained by the Russo-American alliance. America was not a combattant. Russia did all the hard work murdering civilians in schools and maternity wards. Therefore, if this old tradition is to be revived, shouldn't Russia be getting the spoils? Sharing them with Washington is irrefutable proof of the special relationship and the high esteem in which they hold Don I.
The background for these events has been the initiation of trade wars with Canada, Mexico, China , India, Japan and the EU. At the same time the US has proposed removing sanctions on Russia. Washington has also emulated its Russian allies by threatening unprovoked wars of territorial conquest against NATO countries (Canada, Denmark) and Panama. This latter policy change is called the Greenland Doctrine. Its consequences go beyond global instability and chaos. The beneficiaries are Russia and particularly China. While America has no claim to Greenland, the One China policy, agreed to by all sides, gives the PRC some claim to Taiwan. Its also clear America will not defend Taiwan. Or any other old ally in Asia.
Rhetorically America still appears to be antagonistic toward the PRC, but the Greenland doctrine exposes the reality behind the words. Expect a convergence. MIL anticipates a “grand bargain” where America conceeds all its old alliance obligations in Asia in “exchange” for lifting tarrifs. This will be a propaganda device to present America’s embrace of the Axis as rapprochement with the one country that has been an outlier - at least in the minds of the American public. Congressional China hawks will go silent. Indo-pacom will suddenly have nothing to do. Its too soon to expect them to write war plans with Russia and China against regional powers but that will be the inevitable result at some point in time.
In support of these global power shifts, the Trump Administration has been busy at home gutting national security institutions of senior officials likely to push back against the new regime. In the Pentagon, several layers of generals and admirals were shunted aside to find a new chairman of the joint chiefs willing to follow orders.
The same has happened in all domestic national security institutions. The DOJ, FBI, DHS, are being cleared of apolitical staff. For what? To unquestioningly obey the new direction of the new regime. Propaganda is selling this as efficiency. Who can be against efficiency? In fact, it is about control. None of this is shocking or new. It has been the avowed policy of the Trump campaign for years and was fully detailed by chapter and verse in Project 2025. No one should be surprised.
Opportunity
These forseen events, present vital opportunities to improve the world order.1 Putin's invasion of Ukraine was a forcing function that vastly improved European affairs. It created unity, a sense of purpose, and a goal against which to organize. Previously independent states like Sweden and Finland joined NATO. Military spending jumped - the closer to Russia the higher the jump.2
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, one in four Finns supported the country joining NATO. After the full-scale invasion, three in four Finns supported joining.
Any sensible analysts will tell you spending is the least effective indicator of military effectiveness. Just ask the Vietnamese or the Taliban. Ukraine’s success on the battlefield proves this in spades. A country without a navy has sunk a third of the once mighty Russian Black Sea Fleet and sent it into hiding. It has denied a superpower's expected supremacy of the air. It has destroyed more Russian tanks than the Germans at the Battle of Kursk. It has lost some territory, but it has also captured Russian territory for the first time since WWII.
Statistics provided by the armed forces of Ukraine but are generally considered accurate.
In broad economic terms, Ukraine should have been defeated long ago.
Ukraine has just 37m people compared to Russia's 143m and a GDP of $178bn compared to $2t
Instead, Ukraine has achieved the unimaginable. It has a morally, politically, and financially bankrupt ‘superpower' on the ropes. Victory is so close. This is why America has jumped in to save Russia.
Military spending does not account for the most important factor contibuting to success in war - the will to fight (will).
Finns have a word for the fierce combination of will and determination: sisu. Finish President Niinistö said
“As leaders of a country under authoritarian rule, Stalin and Putin failed to recognize . . . that people living in a free country have their own will and convictions. And that a nation that works together constitutes an immense force.”
Nor does military spending account for all the other critical factors in combat - mission command (decentralized decision making and initiative), joint and combined interoperability (Russia-North Korea a case study in failure), integrated kill chains, and robust adaptive logistics.
Free NATO - (FNATO)
NATO has inculcated these critical factors into European military forces individually and collectively. A US free NATO (Free NATO or FNATO) enjoys overmatch in all of these capabilities by comparison to what remains of the armed forces of the Russian federation. Provided America does not militarily support Russia, should the conflict widen as anticipated because of America's betrayal of its old allies, FNATO will be more than sufficient to dominate and humiliate the little man in Moscow.
British and French insistance on their own nuclear deterrent, once an artifact of great power prestige, has overnight become an incredibly smart long term investment. Without it, FNATO would be unable to push back against puny Putin. Anglo-french nuclear weapons consist of sub-launched ballistic missiles.3 Additionally, France operates a small air-launched nuclear missile capability. Neither country has a strategic umbrella with any other country. It is time for that to change.
Political SISU
The unity Russia generated in Europe in 2021 has been expanded and intensified by America's betrayal of Europe. The Europeans surprised the world with their reaction to Russia's second invasion of Ukraine. In short order, they cut their dependence on Russian energy supplies; imposed significant sanctions; willingly absorbed all the migrants Putin tried to ‘weaponsize’ in Ukraine; and flooded the zone with financial and growing military support for the underdog.
It is now time for FNATO to surprise the world again. This time with a unified reaction to America's betrayal.
As the shock of the Munich crisis of 2025 sinks in, with its echos of 1938, the Europeans have moved quickly to imagine what to do about a world where America has joined forces with their sworn enemy.
They have learned the lesson of history. In 1938, Churchill reminded the free world of the power of unity
The preponderant world forces are upon our side; they have but to be combined, to be obeyed.
Accordingly the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared ahead of starting negotiations to form a coalition government
"I would never have thought that I would have to say something like this in a TV show but, after Donald Trump's remarks last week... it is clear that this government does not care much about the fate of Europe," Friedrich Merz said during a post-election debate on Sunday.
My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA," he added.
This is not an isolated reaction. Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said today
The security architecture that Europe has relied on for generations is gone and is not coming back. If the mission of defending freedom and democracy in Europe falls solely on us, we must finally be ready to take it on.
Former French President François Hollande told Le Monde
"Even if the American people remain our friends, the Trump administration itself is no longer our ally." The former French leader also accused Trump of "making pacts with our adversaries."
When it comes to NATO, Hollande says it’s time for the alliance to prepare for the possibility of Trump not complying with Article 5
On the other side of the world, in ever-loyal and dependant Australia, a former PM made an equally stunning statement:
"We cannot assume we can rely on America in the way we have in the past. AUKUS made us more reliant on America than ever, at a time when America is less reliable than ever. America has changed not us"4
It should be no surprise that Denmark, fresh from its first political assault by Washington, would speak out in the strongest terms in support of Ukraine on the anniversary of Russia's expansion of its war of territorial conquest.
Simultaneously, in the Oval Office, French President Emmanuel Macron would not have Trump's lies be forced on him or Europe. Trump pulls this propaganda stunt all the time. He trots out his Russian talking points in front of people who oppose them, expecting his guests (hostages) will play possum. The appearance of agreement is then played on an infinity loop in right wing propaganda echo chambers.
France was not having it. With extraordinary political dexterity, Macron told Trump he was a liar to his face; that Russia is responsible for the war; that it will not be rewarded for the war; and that instead, Russia will pay for the war with its own funds currently frozen in international hands. Funds Trump likely did not now about, but now wants in addition to Ukraine's rare earth minerals.5
It has to be acknowledged that for many years Macron has seen this day coming and has attempted a number of initiatives to create some kind of FNATO. The timing was wrong. The others had not caught up with his prescience. This all changed in Munich.
Plan of Action
The Free-NATO (FNATO) powers, along with strays like Australia, Japan, and all others who wish to join, must take decisive self-protection measures against the Axis of Authoritarianism that now includes America.6
These measures must span the full spectrum of international affairs from trade to migration to collective defense - including changes in FNATO nuclear deterrence plans.
The objectives are clear:
The defeat of Russia and its allies in Ukraine. Not a peace deal. Defeat. As is already obvious, any 'deal' will just buy time for the Axis to rearm and take another swing at Ukraine, the Baltic states or Poland in the near future.
Deter, deny and if necessary, defeat anti-constitutional America from threatening or acting against Europe.
Europe cant invade America and engage in regime change. But it can engage in a range of activities that will enhance pro-constitutional America and at the same time substantially enhance the realities of European security.
Remember this is a propaganda war as much as anything else. The window of opportunity is rapidly closing but there still remains an opportunity to embarrass anti-constitution America to action to clean house. Namely, if the Republicans decide to impeach Trump. Unimaginable today but things are capable of going sideways in extremely unexpected ways. This is the only bloodless solution. Others of course exist, but are much more undesirable.

The Plan
It is essential FNATO can gain a new agreement to a complete and total commitment to FNATO Article 5 - with the express proviso that this is with or without the US.
Then publicly announce FNATO's commitment to Article V as above.
Do everything you can to divide Trump from America or vice versa. Remember only anti-constitutional America has joined forces with Russia. They are a minority. America is still filled with pro-consitution Americans - including this author. Be aware that anti-constitutional America is moving hard and fast to eliminate and undermined constitutional Americans at every turn. Time is limited.
A soft-explusion of America from NATO.
Soft-explusion means, play along with America, pretend nothing has changed, keep up the anti-Russian pressure, keep exploding American lies and propaganda, keep cultivating relationships with good Americans, so that if Trump orders military action against FNATO, the troops wont follow orders. Its not a lot to hold on to, but it is all we've got.
Cut all serious intelligence sharing with America. Tulsi Gabbard is now the head of the IC. All indications point to the risk that everything of value will be passed to Moscow. Beware of corporate America in this respect. Their independence, to the extent they had any before, just collapsed in the face of intimidation from Washington. If they are ordered to share your intelligence with the IC they will not hesitate.
From this day forward, America must be excluded from real defense planning. A talkshow host is in charge at the Pentagon. He has gutted military leadership down to the first line of officers willing to go along with whatever they have in store. Whatever form that takes, it will not be in Europe's interests. Expect that those officers have been briefed on the broad scope of what is coming and have agreed to it.
Plan for major conventional war with Russia. Both in the context of Ukraine, and independent of Ukraine. As noted above, FNATO can win militarily and politically.
Remember, planning and preparation ≠ aggression. Be prepared for American propaganda to scream this old line from the rooftops. Counter it with self defense, pro-old NATO, and pro US Constitution messaging. Embarrass them for hating America, Europe and democracy. Shame them for loving Russia, home of genocide.
Put those who know Russia best at the head of war planning efforts. Likely Finish, Polish and Baltic military planners.
The Baltics states have developed skills and capabilities for special operations against occupying forces. Listen to them. Expand their programs to all allied bordering states willing to rapidly indoctrinate their reserve forces and public in 'stay behind' operations against the occupier.
Round up all Russian saboteur cells around Europe and expell all known or suspected Russian agents.
Initiate special operations and other forms of preparation of the battlespace along the eastern frontier where it makes sense.
Do not ignore Russia's soft underbelly. Use human network operations along the southern flank against them.
Engage in political operations in the far East including China. Remember, unlike FNATO, Russia has no real friends. The Chinese will sell them out or rise up and take Eastern Russia under the right conditions. It Trump wants a global carve up, lets give him one.
Conduct cognitive warfare inside Russia. They have denied or restricted American social media platforms with which they have crippled the West.
Be creative. Find a way. Consider shutting down American based social media domestically. This will open the market for European economic and technical initiatives that can be properly regulated to restrict Russian and American propaganda.
Yes the children will scream until a new electronic pacifier is inserted into their phones. What's more important, facebook or a Russian victory?
Encourage US forces to leave your countries. If necessary, announce demands for high value payments like leases and offsets, in exchange for the continuation of an American presence in your country. Justify these actions with reference to Trump's alliance with Russia.
Trump will likely withdraw US forces from Europe. This will be a blessing. A more strategically minded enemy would keep them there for leaverage and, in extremis, operations. In the new configuration of alliances, American bases are now Russian-allied based deep behind allied lines. Don't count on all US soldiers being anti-maga and refusing orders to kill their hosts.
Have a plan to shut down or at least isolate US bases in your country in the event they do not leave or have not fully departed in time for conflict.
Cancel as many contracts with American defense contracting companies as fesible. Look for high profile contracts that will not impose an unbearable cost on FNATO fighting prowess. Lockheed and the boys will be in the White House and all over the Hill shouting the walls down the next day.
Cancel European defense contracting company contracts with the US. Look for contracts that provide unique contributions that can not be easily backfilled by US firms.
Write new contracts with European firms. There should be plenty of work to go around.
Be prepared to conduct operations within 3 months. It will probably come sooner but we might get lucky.
Nuclear Deterrence
France and the UK, individually or together, should extend a nuclear umbrella over Ukraine.
There are both operational and historical grounds for this action.
Operationally, it is the ultimate backstop against Russian aggression and will signal European determination that it has got very real indeed about its security.
If Ukraine falls then the Baltics are next and by then a nuclear component will be in play. So why throw away Ukraine, which has does so much to crush the Russian barbarians.
Likewise, the Russians are already openly discussing attacks on London and Paris. This is propaganda, but it it not without operational foundation or outside the realm of the plausible in this new global disorder.
The right moral, political and military option for Ukraine and Europe is extending the umbrella, especially as London or Paris are exposed and targeted in any event.
Russia and America will not expect this which is why it must be done.7
History also provides serious grounds for extending the umbrella to Ukraine.
The Budapest Memorandum, 1994 was signed by the United States, Russia, and Britain. It committed those countries to respecting Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and existing borders, as well as to refraining from the use or threat of force against Ukraine, in exchange for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons.
As Russia violated that agreement, it could be argued that Ukraine deserves the restoration of the protection of the nuclear deterrent it gave up. Or at a minimum, a substitute given their national survival is at stake.
Ukraine also signed the NPT as part of that deal. Russia has arguably violated the NPT and has certainly violated New START. Giving Ukraine nuclear weapons, as some have provocatively suggested, would not be proliferating as UKR previously had them. MIL is not advocating this option. Just explaining it.
A more effective solution is for France or the UK, to extend a nuclear umbrella over UKR.
In this context, it only makes sense for the umbrella to be extended to all FNATO countries.
Pro-constitutional America is with you. Only an unexpected shock and awe response from Europe has a chance of defeating Russia and its American puppet.
UPDATE and correction
MIL wrote above that the UK and France only had SLBMs. This is incorrect. Today a story broke that MILs FNATO nuclear deterrence proposal is already being seriously discussed. France operates an air launched nuclear missle of its own design from its fighter aircraft. These weapons are independent of US B61bombs in Europe. The plan involves stationing the French aircraft and bombs in Germany. Incredibly
An unnamed German diplomat told The Telegraph that they considered that Merz and his CDU party — now the strongest single force in German politics — believe that “a nuclear umbrella” is needed for Europe, outside of the ‘dual-key’ arrangement with the United States. “We want to have a say in this, we should be ready to talk about this, and we are willing to pay for it,” the same diplomat added.
As for the missile itself, this is a medium-range supersonic standoff cruise missile equipped with a thermonuclear warhead of around 300 kilotons. Its liquid-fuel ramjet engine powers it at speeds of Mach 3 over a maximum range of around 500 kilometers (310 miles), depending on the flight profile. In 2015, the then-president of France, François Hollande, confirmed that France had 54 operational ASMP-A missiles.
The idea of some kind of European nuclear deterrent has also been raised in the past by France. In fact, as long ago as 2007, France proposed talks with Germany on sharing its nuclear arsenal, although Berlin was unmoved. The theme was raised again in 2020, by Macron, who suggested a “Europeanized” French nuclear deterrence.
For a compelling summation of the Trump project this FREE GIFT article explains it all very succinctly.
This reflected a realization that America would likely find excuses not to meet is obligations to NATO, at least on ether side of the last normal Administration.
They do not include 'tactical' nuclear weapons. In Europe, these exist only in the American arsenal in the form of B-61 gravity bombs. Operationally, America shares these weapons with select NATO powers that have platforms (F16s, F35s, and Tornados) capable of delivering them. With a variable yield from <1 to ~400kt some might contest their description as ‘tactical’. The point here however, is as US owned weapons based in Europe, the B-61s would not be available to FNATO, thereby limiting FNATO deterrence platforms to British and French SSBMs. This is enough.
The one occasion that unprecedented statement resembles is when the sitting PM John Curtin famously sent shockwaves through history when he said weeks before the fall of Singapore in 1942
"Without any inhibitions of any kind, I make it quite clear that Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom"
If Trump was president in 1991 he would have joined Saddam in taking Kuwait's oil!
As a former American defense official it pains me to my core to offer the following advice. My loyalty is the US Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. The hope here is anti-consitutional America will be humiliated and withdraws. Not double down for Putin. At the same time it is also hoped that these anticipated events might trigger a constitutional crisis in America that results in the restoration of the constitution and democracy. This cannot be taken for granted.
